Celebrating Peace

On the International Day of Peace, the Hawaii Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in conjunction with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and PAX Christi Hawaii, held a public peace prayer service at St. Anthony Church in Kailua. Right, as prayers for peace are said aloud, St. Anthony School first grader Nathan Phillip Wilkie, 6, and his uncle, Resurrectionist Father Manuel Williams, took their turn adding salt to a bowl of water, symbolizing both the world's sorrow (salt) and common source of life and a hope for peace (water). Father Williams, who is based in Montgomery, Ala., also incensed a "peace pole," which had "May Peace Prevail On Earth" written on it in four languages.  Left, prayer service attendees prayed around the pole before each blessed it with holy water. PAX Christi Hawaii, part of a national Catholic peace organization, plans to hold two more prayer services this year.
