Father Walter Memorial Child Care Center
The Father Walter Memorial Child Care Center is one of only two 24 hour pediatric nursing care facilities in the state of Alabama. Despite their severe challenges, our children lead rich lives. Between attending school ,enjoying friends, bowling, the movies, the zoo, the state fair, church, birthday parties, the prom, and watching cartoons, the schedules they keep are amazing.
Father Walter’s offers medical, dental, optometric, nursing, dietetic and other therapeutic care. Our pediatrician is especially skilled in meeting the needs of our special children. Direct care is given by a full range of nursing professionals; registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants providing constant and loving attention. Our state-of-the-art camera surveillance system allows the staff and administration to monitor the safety of the children and to respond instantly to any emergency, large or small.
Admission Policy
Discussing your child’s needs with our Director of Nursing will help determine if Father Walter’s Memorial Child Care Center is right for your child.
When you and our Admissions Officer agree that Father Walter's meets your child’s needs, please follow these steps to insure your child has a smooth and efficient transition into the Center.
Call to arrange a tour for you and your child.
Obtain releases and have all medical and educational records sent to our Director of Nursing. A day visit will be scheduled.
A Level I screening, as required by the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA), will be initiated by our Admissions Officer.
Schedule and execute a day visit for your child. During the visit, your child will be able to interact with all the various departments of Father Walter’s.
A Level II Pre-admission Screen will then be completed by the Alabama Department of Mental Health/Mental Retardation OBRA Screening. Determination of medical eligibility criteria for nursing home placement is evaluated.
The Medical Director will review your child’s medical records to evaluate the individual care needs and a determination will be made at that time to approve your child’s admission to Father Walter’s.
Once approved you will be notified by our Admissions Officer of your child’s admission date. On the day of admission, your child will complete a physical examination by a pediatrician.

Treatments include enteral feedings, trach care,
wound care and IV therapy
Services covered by Medicaid but billed separately include:
Staff physician visits and E.P.S.D.T. screening
Therapeutic treatment: e.g. intravenous or subcutaneous fluids, oxygen therapy, etc..
Semi-annual dental exam including teeth cleaning
Lab work, x-ray, ambulance transport, etc..
Your child must qualify for SSI, in order to receive Medicaid LTC benefits. A “Personal Needs Account” can be set up for the monthly SSI check with your approval.
