OBITUARY

A Life Well Lived

August 16, 1949 – February 10, 2022

Alcyne Delores Chapman Hamilton-Harris was born on August 16, 1949 to the late Mr. Robert James Chapman and Mrs. Sarah Cobb Chapman-Childrey.  Her brother, Robert Chapman, III, preceded her in death.

Alcyne was baptized on Sunday, September 1, 1963 at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.  She was confirmed in the Catholic faith in 2002.

She met and married her first husband, Hilory Hamilton, Jr.   She later joined in matrimony with Clarence “Buddy” Harris who died in 2019.

Alcyne graduated from Alabama State Laboratory High School in 1969.  There she formed a life-long friendship with Hardy Braswell, III and Walter Orange of “The Commodores”.  She was a 1967 debutante in Birmingham, AL.  She also attended Booker T. Washington Business College, Birmingham, AL in 1968. 

She was named Head of the Music Department and was a teacher at Lomax-Hannon Junior College, Greenville, AL in 1969. 

After her mother’s death, while attending school at night, she attended Draughon Junior College where she received a degree in Computer Information Systems in 1998.

In 1999 Alcyne was awarded “Student of the Year” from the Alabama Governor’s Montgomery Area Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. 

In 1998 she began her employment at Resurrection Catholic Missions where she worked until her retirement in 2020.  Throughout her career, Alcyne, a skillful seamstress created many of her work and leisure outfits.

In addition to her professional work, Alcyne worked as a volunteer for Faith Crusades Rescue Mission, Montgomery County Commission Sheriff’s Office, Colonial Mortgage Company and Ira C. Eaker College for Professional Development, Maxwell AFB, Montgomery.  She was a Massey-Draughon Business College Honor Student. 

In later years she enjoyed vacations on cruise liners throughout her life.  And she found great companionship with her dog, King.

She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Hunter; brother, Clifford Hunter; nieces, Felicia (Leroy) Edwards, Mychelle Rayby, and Katrina Hunter; and a nephew, Robin Chapman.
