Last week, the 2019 Resurrection Collegiate Volunteer Program kicked off with our first group of students joining us from the prestigious Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
The group was comprised of staff coordinator Dr. Marquita Taylor, student coordinator Alexia Williams, and participants Lillian Ekem, Juan Otoya Vanini, Marwan Safar Jelani, and Larissa Nguyen.
During their week here at the Mission, the students performed service work with Resurrection’s pillar programs and learned more about Montgomery’s ties to civil rights and social justice over dinner Tuesday with local civil rights and social justice figures and advocates. During the dinner, the students even shared their own stories rooted in identity, struggle, and their current ties to social justice.
Also, while in Montgomery, the students had the opportunity to visit the Freedom Rides Museum, the Civil Rights Memorial Center, and EJI’s National Memorial for Peace & Justice and Legacy Museum. The students also took a short trip to explore nearby Selma.
We here at Resurrection were so pleased to welcome our first group of #RCVP2019, and we look forward to another great cycle of collegiate formation and immersion.
